How to choose a dog coat

A winter coat is a great addition to your pets wardrobe, and will provide them with insulation and aid in keeping them warm throughout the cooler months. It is important to choose a coat that is properly suited to the climate, and your dog’s breed and size. The coat should be a snug fit to trap the body heat, but not too tight where it restricts movement. We’ve done the research to help you make the right choice for your dog when choosing a dog coat!

How to measure your dog for a coat?

If you decide your dog does need a dog, it is vital that the coat fits them properly. If the coat doesn't fit them correctly, our pets can experience discomfort, just like we would if we wore the wrong sized clothes. Please follow these simple steps as a guide to select the right size coat for your dog.

  1. Measure the length of your dog by measuring from the base of their neck (where the collar sits), to the base of their tail
  2. Take note of the number in centimetres, and match this to the size of the dog coat e.g. if the dog is 50cm long, they will need a 50cm coat
  3. If your dog measures between two sizes, we recommend sizing up, as most coats offer adjustability to make it fit
  4. If you’re still unsure, bring your dog into Woonona Petfoods, and one of our friendly and well-trained team members will happily measure and fit your dog for a coat

Types of dog coats

  • Fleece sweaters and jumpers: provides insulation for pets in dry, cool conditions - perfect for winter nights!
  • Rain coat: simple, waterproof layer that protects your dog from wet weather without them overheating
  • All-purpose: waterproof, windproof and has a layer of fleece or padding to keep your dog warm, offering complete protection from the elements and suited to cold climates
  • High-visibility: a bright and reflective coat that is ideal during early morning or late night walks

When choosing the dog coat, you need to consider what coat will best suit your dog and their lifestyle. For example, if your dog is likely to be outdoors in windy, cold and rainy conditions, an all purpose dog coat such as the Pet One Night Walker would be perfect. This multi-purpose coat is not only water resistant and windproof, but comes equipped with a heavy-duty 600D polyester filling to keep them warm even during the coldest nights.

On the other hand, if your dog generally stays indoors but needs a little extra warmth, the Pet One Komfy Knit Jumper is a great choice. Made from soft knit material, this jumper will ensure they stay cosy even during the coldest winter nights. Your choice may also depend on the climate that you live in and the thickness of your dog's coat. Owners who have dogs with a thick coat may be more inclined to choose a lighter option. However, if you live in a climate with cold winters, even a little polyfill in a coat can provide your dog added warmth and protection. Other important features that you may look for are night visibility, breathability and comfort.

Most importantly, your dog should always be able to move freely in their coat, and do everything they would usually do without the coat on - running, jumping, and going to the toilet! If they are unable to do these things with ease, the coat is probably not the right fit for them. If you need assistance in selecting and fitting a coat for your dog, come into Woonona Petfoods and we will help find the perfect coat for your furry friend.
